Drag Racing

Ford Mustang

I have been interested in drag racing since high school and remember the time back in around the year 2000 when Estonian National records started with 12 seconds and then over the years moved quickly below 10 seconds. It has been my dream to build a drag racing car and in recent years I decided to go for it.

For that reason I’ve purchased an ’81 Ford Mustang Fox Body empty body that already had some racing history from the past. I am planning on participating in the Super Comp class.

To accommodate my ambition to go faster with this car, the roll cage was completely redone by Harri Lillevars as the first job. Previous 9.9 index roll cage was updated with an 8.5 index cage which if necessary could be upgraded to 7.5 with few modifications.

The car is being built by Andres Arnover & Fast Ford Racing team. I am happy to cooperate with Andres as he is one of the most experienced drag racers in Estonia with extensive knowledge and experience. We will be using a 6 liter LS engine with 88mm turbo and a Powerglide 2-Speed automatic transmission which is a dedicated transmission for drag cars. The initial setup will be around 1000-1300hp and the aim is to build a car that could run a quarter mile under 9 seconds.

What’s cool is that the rear axle com es from a Ford Explorer. These 8.8-inch axles are known for their high durability and apart from drag racing are also widely used in off road sports. It’s nice to know that I have a spare available in our garage and no I did not know how good and special that rear axle was when I bought Ford Explorer 🙂 With the current schedule, first competitions are planned for the 2023 season.
